Here at Escapologic® we have always prided ourselves on the immersion of our escape rooms; anyone who has dared to face the Butcher will remember all too clearly how much effort we put into making our rooms seem real. With Immaterium we have a chance to provide something truly special, an experience like no other. For the first time ever, the universe of Warhammer 40,000 is being brought to life in vivid detail, right in the heart of Nottingham City Centre.
It is very important to us that Immaterium be accessible for everyone, including those unfamiliar with Warhammer and its game world, and we hope to achieve this by creating our most immersive experience yet. If you consider our current games, we certainly don't expect teams to have existing knowledge of the game worlds they are entering. When players first stepped into Crypt-ic four years ago they certainly hadn't heard the name 'King Heritho' before, and when a team steps into Curio's manor house, they do so with no prior knowledge about the man or the madness that revolves around him. And yet, those players became immersed in those characters and settings. For one hour, those places and characters became real. This is purely down to Escapologic's approach to creating an escape room. Before puzzles, layout, and decor are even considered, a backstory is written. Characters are created and their lives are planned out. The world of that hour long experience is drafted out to be called upon to inform everything that follows in the creative process.
Backstory informs immersion, and Immaterium has the richest backstory in escape room history. The Warhammer 40,000 universe is so extensive that Games Workshop had to create a smaller company, The Black Library, simply to chronicle the vastness of their story with entire series of novels being dedicated to fleshing out that universe. And so in designing Immaterium, we've been able to pick the parts that best appeal to everybody. If you're unfamiliar with Warhammer, when you step aboard Evadere The Tempestas, you'll find yourself in an Apollo 13 style mission. You're on a badly damaged spaceship, and you need to fix it using only what you have on board. And of course, this being an escape room, while you do this you'll also get a taste of another reality. However this time, it's not a dank, long forgotten crypt. It's a reality where you'll not only feel the tension of the situation at hand, but where you'll get a feel for the atmosphere of this new world which you're experiencing for the first time. A world where Gothic architecture adorns the walls of spaceships, and mankind can tap into Warpspace to achieve faster-than-light travel. You'll frantically search the ship for anything you can use, lest you be lost forever to the underworld of space - the Immaterium.
If you're an existing fan of Warhammer 40,000 your experience will be immersive for a different reason. You'll be standing inside the interior of a ship you've seen in artwork, read about in stories, or seen and painted models of. For you the world will be familiar, but it's the little touches, the subtle nods and easter eggs which bring the game to life in a way you haven't experienced before.
This will be our biggest, most daring room yet, and we cannot wait to share it with you. Immaterium offers an experience which is designed to appeal to all. And so, All Hail the God-Emperor of Mankind!
